Short answer
Life Gem + Heroic Torch, with air and ground armies alike. It 3-starred 65.9% of 3,600 fresh simulated TH18 attacks, 3.3 points ahead of Eternal Tome + Life Gem. Life Gem is the most valuable item any hero has: about 19 three-star points over an empty slot.

Each number compares the item with leaving that slot empty: three-star points with each kind of army, the share of the base’s building HP destroyed by the Warden and by everything else, and the seconds he lasts. With both slots empty the army 3-stars 30% of the time, the lowest of any hero (the others land at 34 to 43%), so the Warden’s two slots matter more than anyone’s.
His five best items work almost entirely through the army: Life Gem adds 6.8% of the base for everyone else and 0.8% for him. Fireball is the opposite. The Warden destroys 4.6% more of the base with it, but the rest of the army destroys 2.4% less, because it mostly takes buildings the army was about to take.
Every pair
Life Gem appears in four of the top five pairs and Fireball in four of the bottom five. Rage Gem pairs climb with ground armies: Rage Gem + Heroic Torch scores 64.2% with them and 51.8% with air armies.
What the guides pick
Of six tier lists published from August to early October 2026, five name Eternal Tome as the Warden’s anchor, paired with Fireball (AllClash, SkyCoach, TrophyCoach) or Healing Tome (ClashOS, Webhat), and three of the lists call Fireball worth it only from level 24. GamsGo picks Rage Gem + Heroic Torch. None of the six pairs Life Gem with Heroic Torch, and the four that rate Life Gem give it B, C+, C and A.
The gap comes from where the value shows up. Life Gem’s extra HP keeps the army alive inside the Warden’s ring, so the base falls faster, but the Warden himself does no more damage. Supercell buffed both Life Gem and Heroic Torch on 12 January 2026, and Life Gem is a Common item, so the best Warden item maxes at level 18.
Version and platform notes
Max TH18 levels (Heroic Torch, Fireball and Lavaloon Puppet are Epic items at 27; Life Gem, Eternal Tome, Healing Tome and Rage Gem are Common items at 18), with Supercell’s October 2026 changes in (live since the 20 October maintenance break); none of them touched a Warden item. The simulator uses the in-game Life Gem rule: the bonus ends one second after a troop leaves the ring. Everything here applies the same on iOS and Android.

- The armies: the 13 army families used most in ranked (TrophyCoach tracker, 30 days to 5 October 2026), weighted by use, plus the best ground and air armies. The King, Queen and Duke keep the kits top players run.
- The sweep: every pair of Warden items, and every item next to an empty slot, on the same 120 generated max TH18 bases with the same dice, 1,800 attacks per pair. Item values are fitted across every pair they appear in.

Limits
- Max level only. Lower levels can change the order, most of all between items that scale mainly with raw HP and damage.
- Simple ability timing. The simulated Warden uses his ability when the army around him takes heavy fire. A player who times Eternal Tome or Fireball well gets more from them than these numbers show.
- Generated bases, not real ones, and the other three heroes fixed on one kit each.
