Is heavy armor better than light armor in Skyrim?

Short answer

It depends on your build. At skill 100 with every armor perk, untempered and with no shield, full Daedric cuts physical damage by 69.75%, against 55.5% for Dragonscale, the best light set compared. Light sets weigh far less, and once you reach the 80% armor cap, light armor protects as well as heavy.

Heavy armor protects more, until the cap

With Light Armor or Heavy Armor at 100, every armor perk, no smithing and no shield, a full Daedric set cuts physical damage by 69.75%. Dragonscale, the best of the three light sets compared, cuts 55.5%. Every heavy set compared beats every light set: even Steel Plate, at 58.12%, outdoes Dragonscale.

By default, heavy armor gives more protection than light armor. The gap starts with base ratings: a full Daedric set has 108 against Dragonscale’s 82, and the skill bonus and each tree’s armor perks then scale both by the same factors.

Armor can never cut physical damage by more than 80%, whatever your displayed armor rating. With all four armor pieces and no shield, a displayed rating of 567 reaches that cap.

Untempered, none of the seven sets gets there. Daedric’s 481.25 armor rating leaves it 85.75 short, and Elven’s 262.5 leaves it 304.5 short. UESP puts the base rating a set would need in this setup at about 130; Daedric’s is 108.

Reaching the cap evens things out. Once you are there, light armor protects as well as heavy armor, and the two differ mainly in their specialty perks.

When each option wins

You skip smithing: heavy armor

Without tempering, every heavy set compared protects more than every light set. With four pieces and a shield, the cap takes 542 displayed rating instead of 567. Relying only on armor skill and perks, heavy armor can reach the cap (for example a Daedric set with a matching shield), while light armor cannot.

You use smithing: either can reach the cap

Both armor types can reach the cap, and smithing makes that much easier, though heavy armor gets there with less investment. At the cap protection is equal, so what’s left to compare is weight, noise and the specialty perks below.

You carry a lot: light armor, until the weight perks

Light sets compared weigh 7 to 20; heavy sets weigh 59 to 81. Light armor takes up less of your carry weight, and without Conditioning or the Steed Stone, heavy armor slows you down much more and drains stamina faster while sprinting.

Unhindered (Light Armor 50) makes worn light armor weigh nothing and stop slowing you down. Conditioning (Heavy Armor 70) does the same for heavy armor, 20 skill levels later, and the Steed Stone can also cancel heavy armor’s weight and speed penalties.

You want stamina and melee dodges: light armor

Wind Walker (Light Armor 60) makes stamina regenerate 50% faster when your head, chest, hands and feet are all light armor. Deft Movement (Light Armor 100) is described as a 10% chance to take no damage at all from a melee attack while you wear all light armor; the version notes below give its actual chance.

You sneak: light armor

Heavy armor is louder than light armor, which makes sneaking in it harder.

What players pick: light armor

Three of the four sources pick light armor, one calls it personal preference, and none picks heavy armor. All four are Steam Community forum threads or player-written guides. One recommends light armor for the unmodded game, one says it’s better unless you fight unarmed, and one prefers it once Smithing is maxed on Legendary difficulty.

Version and platform notes

The calculation uses UESP’s set values, perk values and formulas for the unmodded game. UESP says Deft Movement actually triggers 11% of the time, not the 10% its description gives, and that version 2.0.5 of the Unofficial Skyrim Patch corrects it.

How we counted

Each piece’s base armor rating is multiplied by 1.4 for skill 100 and rounded up, following UESP’s formula. The four pieces are then added and multiplied by 1.25 for Custom Fit or Well Fitted, 1.25 for Matching Set and 2 for rank 5 of Agile Defender or Juggernaut. The three perk bonuses multiply each other rather than add.

Damage reduction is the armor rating times 0.12% plus 3% for each of the four pieces worn, capped at 80%. The rating still needed for the cap is 567 minus the set’s armor rating, and the armor rating total is left unrounded.

Base ratings and weights are UESP’s for full matched sets of helmet, cuirass, gauntlets and boots, and the perk values come from its Light Armor and Heavy Armor pages, all accessed 24 October 2026. As a check, UESP’s own example for this setup gives Daedric 481 displayed rating (69.8% reduction) and Dragonscale 362 (55.5%). This calculation leaves the totals unrounded, so it shows Daedric at 481.25 and 69.75%.

The source count covers the four sources on light against heavy armor: two Steam Community threads, one from the original Skyrim board and one from the Special Edition board, and two Steam Community guides. Wiki pages and guide-site articles list trade-offs or rank sets without an overall pick, so they aren’t counted. Each source counts once, and the count was made on 24 October 2026.

Limits

  • Untempered and unshielded. The armor ratings leave out smithing, shields, enchantments, potions, spells and standing stones.
  • One skill level. Only skill 100 with every armor perk is calculated, not lower levels or partial perk ranks.
  • Seven sets. Other light and heavy sets aren’t compared.
  • Physical damage only. Armor rating doesn’t reduce magical damage.
  • No movement. The calculation leaves out movement speed, stamina use and noise.
  • Perks as described. The specialty perks are listed by their effects, not measured in fights.
  • Approximate formulas. UESP labels its armor formulas approximate.
  • Counts, not tests. The source count shows what four forum and guide sources prefer.

Related questions

Is light armor worth it in Skyrim?

It can be: three of the four forum and guide sources pick light armor, and none picks heavy armor. Light armor weighs much less and is quieter for sneaking, and with smithing it can reach the 80% cap, where it protects as well as heavy armor. Without smithing, it can't reach the cap on armor skill and perks alone.

What is the armor cap in Skyrim, and why is it 567?

Armor can cut physical damage by at most 80%. Each armor piece or shield you wear adds a hidden 3% on top of your displayed armor rating, so with all four armor pieces and no shield, a displayed rating of 567 reaches the cap. With a shield it takes 542, and with no armor pieces 667.

Which Skyrim armor set gives the most damage reduction?

Of the seven sets compared, untempered at skill 100 with every armor perk and no shield, Daedric gives the most: 69.75%, from a 481.25 armor rating. Dragonplate follows at 66.0% and Ebony at 63.38%. None of them reaches the 80% cap without smithing or a shield.

Is Dragonscale or Daedric armor better in Skyrim?

Daedric protects more: at skill 100 with every armor perk, untempered and with no shield, it cuts physical damage by 69.75% against Dragonscale's 55.5%. Dragonscale weighs 20 to Daedric's 81. With smithing, light and heavy armor can both reach the 80% cap, and once there light armor protects as well as heavy.

Does heavy armor slow you down in Skyrim?

Yes, much more than light armor, until you take Conditioning (Heavy Armor 70) or use the Steed Stone, either of which cancels heavy armor's weight and speed penalties. Light armor's Unhindered perk does the same for light armor at Light Armor 50, 20 skill levels earlier.
